TAMPA, Fla. – North Carolina FC goalkeeper Alex Tambakis has earned the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Month award for April of the 2019 season as his one-handed reflex save against Memphis 901 FC in Week 5 at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park took top honors in the online poll that ran over the past weekend.
Tambakis made 14 stops over the month to help North Carolina achieve a 2-1-1 record and the best of the bunch came late in his side’s 1-1 draw with Memphis as he read a low shot-cross through his six-yard box from 901 FC’s Adam Najem perfectly, allowing him to palm the effort away despite the onrushing attackers.
Tambakis’ save earned 50 percent of the poll conducted online at USLChampionship.com that concluded on Monday. New Mexico United’s Cody Mizell finished second with 41 percent for his diving save on the Portland Timbers 2’s Eryk Williamson, while Charlotte Independence youngster Curtis Anderson took third for his acrobatic denial of North Carolina FC’s Ben Speas.
