Louisville defeats Memphis on goals by Rasmussen, Mkosana; Toros continue undefeated run in Portland

LouCity grabbed victory in the USL Championship Game of the Week against Memphis, while Rio Grande Valley FC extended its undefeated streak to five games to vault up the Western Conference in Portland.

PORTLAND TIMBERS 2 (1), RIO GRANDE VALLEY FC (2)

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Toros extended their undefeated streak to five games as a late goal by Carlos Small lifted the visitors past T2 at Merlo Field. RGVFC took the lead in just the ninth minute as a free kick from the left fell kindly for Wilmer Cabrera Jr., who tucked away a finish into the right corner of the net. The Toros carried their lead to halftime, but in the second half T2 began to build pressure and RGVFC goalkeeper Tyler Deric had to make a good save to deny Eryk Williamson from the right side of the penalty area in the 61st minute. Portland got back on level terms 10 minutes later when Williamson’s free kick from the right to the back post was volleyed home by Modou Jadama, giving the Western Conference leader hope of a share of the points, but the Toros redoubled their attacking efforts and with five minutes to go were rewarded. Jesus Enriquez found space for an initial shot that got past T2 goalkeeper Jake Leeker but was blocked on the goal line by Max Ornstil, but Small was on hand to put away the rebound and give RGVFC its first road win of the season.

LOUISVILLE CITY FC (2), MEMPHIS 901 FC (1)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Louisville City FC earned an important win over a gritty Memphis 901 FC side to string together back-to-back victories for the second time this season in front of a crowd of 7,816 fans at Slugger Field. The visitors approached the opening period aggressively and applied pressure on the Louisville backline but failed to beat City goalkeeper Ben Lundt. Turning the momentum the other direction, Louisville opened the scoring in the 33rd minute when midfielder Magnus Rasmussen pounced on a loose ball in the box and belted it past Memphis netminder Scott Levene. Gaining control of the match, Louisville doubled their lead just after the hour mark when forward Lucky Mkosana poked in a well-placed driven cross from fellow forward Abdou Mbacke Thiam. Not going away, Memphis would find a spark in the 73rd minute when Mbacke Thiam ended up flicking a 901 FC corner into his own net. However, the hosts were prepared to see out the match and extended their unbeaten streak to three.
