Independence goalkeeper’s full-stretch save in the North Carolina Derby took top spot in weekly poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Charlotte Independence goalkeeper Curtis Anderson has claimed the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 7 of the 2019 season for an outstanding diving save in the North Carolina Derby last Saturday night at the Sportsplex at Matthews.

The former England U-17 international goalkeeper, Anderson made the move to Charlotte from the Manchester City Academy earlier this season as he entered the professional ranks on the other side of the Atlantic. After helping the Independence pick up their first win of the season earlier in the week, Anderson showed off his prodigious ability with a full-stretch save that denied North Carolina FC’s Ben Speas on a curling shot to the top-right corner of the net.

Anderson’s save earned 45 percent of the poll conducted online at USLChampionship.com that concluded on Friday morning. Austin Bold FC shot-stopper Diego Restrepo finished second with 22 percent for his diving save on Phoenix Rising FC’s Jason Johnson, while OKC Energy FC’s Cody Laurendi finished third with 20 percent for his reflex stop that helped Energy FC preserve victory against Orange County SC last Saturday night.
