Reflex save to preserve point against Memphis claims top spot in weekly poll

TAMPA, Fla. – North Carolina FC goalkeeper Alex Tambakis has earned the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 5 of the 2019 season for his outstanding late save that preserved a point for his side in a 1-1 draw with Memphis 901 FC at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park last Saturday night.

Tambakis was named to the USL Championship Team of the Week on Tuesday for his standout display that helped a 10-man NCFC maintain its undefeated record. He saved arguably his best save against 901 FC for last, getting down to turn away a low cross-shot off a free kick by Memphis’ Adam Najem that ensured there would be no rebound chance for the visitors.

Tambakis’ save earned 48 percent of the poll conducted online at USLChampionship.com that concluded on Friday morning. Hartford Athletic’s Jacob Lissek finished second on 38 percent for his denial of a close-range volley by the Rowdies’ Sebastian Guenzatti, while Louisville City FC’s Ben Lundt finished third on 10 percent for his reflex save to keep out a close-range header by Riverhounds SC’s Steevan Dos Santos.
