Goals from Svantesson, Lewis help Battery claim Southern Derby win over Independence

In their second Southern Derby match in as many weeks, the Charleston Battery cruised to victory over the Charlotte Independence to continue their unbeaten start to the 2019 campaign.

CHARLESTON BATTERY (2) VS CHARLOTTE INDEPENDENCE (0)

CHARLESTON, S.C. – Goals from Ian Svantesson and Zeiko Lewis helped the Battery to victory over the Independence at MUSC Health Stadium. The visitors started the brighter of the two sides and nearly took the lead in the 17th minute through Dominic Oduro, who was played in on goal by Enzo Martínez but was unable to slot a right-footed shot past Charleston goalkeeper Joe Kuzminsky. The Battery opened the scoring four minutes later as Romario Piggott’s initial effort from the right side of the penalty area was blocked, but Svantesson reacted quickest to sweep home his third goal of the season. The home side nearly doubled its advantage eight minutes before halftime as Lewis got behind the Charlotte defense but saw his effort smothered by Independence goalkeeper Brandon Miller. Lewis forced another save from Miller with a long-range free kick just after the hour-mark and finally got on the scoresheet in the 71st minute with a wonderful left-footed curling effort that found the top-left corner. Independence defender Hugh Roberts struck the post from a Mark Hill corner kick seven minutes later and Kotaro Higashi cleared the ensuing rebound attempt off the line, but that was as close as Charlotte would come to getting back in the game.
