Wright strikes late to give Legion FC first victory in club history

After weathering the previous night's storms, Birmingham Legion FC made history with not only its first goal, but also its first victory in club history.

Louisville City FC (2), Birmingham Legion FC (3)

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Legion FC (1-2-0, 3pts) claimed its first victory in club history thanks to Brian Wright’s late winner against LouCity (2-2-0, 6pts) at Slugger Field. Louisville twice went close to opening the scoring in the opening 20 minutes only for Magnus Rasmussen and Speedy Williams to be denied by fine saves from Legion FC goalkeeper Matt Van Oekel. The hosts found the breakthrough on the half-hour mark as Rasmussen put home a powerful header into the right corner, but less than a minute later Birmingham hit back as Prosper Kasim scored the first goal in club history with a fine piece of control on Eric Avila’s chipped ball over the top before he finished into the roof of the net. Nine minutes before halftime Legion FC went ahead as Chandler Hoffman scored against his former club, volleying home a cross by Wright, and Wright almost added a third moments later only for LouCity goalkeeper Ben Lundt to just keep the ball from crossing the line at the second attempt after a close-range finish. Louisville hit back with nine minutes to go as a cross by Mbacke Thiam took a faint deflection off Birmingham defender Mathieu Laurent and found the net for an own goal, but after Oscar Jimenez blazed over with a chance to put the hosts ahead with five minutes to go, Wright capitalized after Legion FC recycled a half-cleared free kick to fire home in the 87th minute with a low shot into the right corner. When George Davis IV’s header for the hosts deep in stoppage time went over, Legion FC’s first win was sealed.
