U.S. U-17 international’s standout stop in first professional start takes top spot in poll

TAMPA, Fla. – Orange County SC goalkeeper Aaron Cervantes has earned the USL Championship Fans’ Choice Save of the Week for Week 3 of the 2019 season for a remarkable one-on-one stop that helped keep his side in the game before a late rally earned a 2-2 draw against New Mexico United at Champions Soccer Stadium last Saturday night.

The United States U-17 international continued a trend of strong performances by young goalkeepers in the league, taking the Save of the Week honor a week after U.S. U-20 international David Ochoa of Real Monarchs SLC. Making his first professional start for OCSC, Cervantes showed all of his ability as he reacted perfectly to keep out a shot by New Mexico’s Rhys Williams from the right side of the penalty area.

Cervantes’ save earned 50 percent of the poll conducted online at USLChampionship.com that concluded on Friday morning. El Paso Locomotive FC’s Logan Ketterer finished second on 22 percent for his excellent stop to keep out a long-range free kick by RGVFC’s Camilo Monroy, while New Mexico United’s Cody Mizell finished third on 16 percent for a diving save to his left and kept out a long-distance effort by Orange County’s Harry Forrester.
