Roughnecks pick up third victory of season; New Mexico rallies for first road win

The Roughnecks have matched their 2018 win-total in March, while New Mexico claimed its first road win in club history and the Red Bulls II remain tough at home.

Tacoma Defiance (1), New Mexico United (2)

TACOMA, Wash. – New Mexico United rallied from an early deficit to earn victory against the Defiance at Cheney Stadium. It took Tacoma just two minutes to open the scoring when Azriel Gonzalez scored from close range, and the hosts got a big goal line clearance two minutes later by Modou Ndow to deny NMU forward Kevaughn Frater’s lobbed finish of Defiance goalkeeper Trey Muse. New Mexico got a slice of good fortune in the 37th minute when a shot deflected off a defender and then off NMU midfielder Ryan Williams to find the net. The visitors then almost took the lead in the 53th minute when Santi Moar hit the right post, and then again later in the same sequence when Saalih Muhammad had his shot palmed away by Muse, but New Mexico hit the front with 13 minutes to go when Frater’s close-range header converted Moar’s cut-back from the left, and that proved enough to earn NMU its first road victory in club history.

Tulsa Roughnecks FC (2), Rio Grande Valley FC (1)

TULSA, Okla. – The Roughnecks took their second consecutive victory to claim a third win of the season overall, matching their 2018 total, as they downed the Toros at ONEOK Field. The Roughnecks took the lead in the 19th minute after Cristhian Altamirano was fouled in the penalty area, which allowed Rodrigo da Costa to convert from the spot. Tulsa struck again as the game moved into first-half stoppage time on an outstanding finish from 25 yards by Fabian Bastidas that picked out the top-right corner to give the hosts added momentum into the break. The Toros made a game of it with 18 minutes to go as Nico Lemoine arrived unmarked to flick home a header from Isidro Martinez from the left, but despite their late efforts they were unable to mount a second consecutive comeback as the Roughnecks held firm to move into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference.

New York Red Bulls II (3), Memphis 901 FC (2)

MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Red Bulls II continued their undefeated start to the season as a trio of players found the net for the hosts against 901 FC at MSU Soccer Park. Memphis took the lead in the 11th minute when former Red Bulls Academy standout Adam Najem finished from close range off a cross by Duane Muckette, but New York hit back seven minutes later on a fierce volley by Jared Stroud. The Red Bulls II then took the lead in the first minute of first-half stoppage time as Tom Barlow cleaned up a close-range rebound for his third goal of the season, and then added a third in the 56th minute when Derrick Etienne Jr. tucked home a finish after Brian White had hit the crossbar. 901 FC answered five minutes later as captain Marc Burch powered home a free kick from 20 yards, but while White had a late penalty kick saved by Memphis goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell when he had the chance to ice the game in second-half stoppage time, New York held firm defensively to claim its second win of the season.
