SAFC Face Rivals Austin Bold FC Next Saturday

San Antonio FC (0-2-1) fell 0-1 to Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (2-1-0) on Saturday in the team’s first away match of the season. A late Switchbacks goal gave the hosts the win despite a good performance from the Alamo City club and a five-save performance from goalkeeper Matthew Cardone.

“It was a tough game tonight with not much between the two clubs,” SAFC Head Coach Darren Powell said. “I thought we fought well and battled extremely hard, but we were unable to capitalize on the opportunities we had. At the end of the day it’s tough when you concede a goal so late, but our players worked hard and we need to get back to work this week to improve.”

Forward Cesar Romero scored the lone goal of the match in the 86th minute on his Switchbacks debut. The Alamo City club was unable to find an equalizer despite recording eight shots and four on target as well as winning 56 percent of their duels.

Cardone’s five saves on the night were his most this season, while defender Kai Greene recorded six tackles and Josh Yaro led the team with six clearances. In the attack, midfielder Lance Laing recorded three shots while the team recorded seven chances created.

SAFC defender Moises Hernandez made his first appearance for SAFC after re-joining the club on loan from FC Dallas earlier this week. The Texas native recorded five tackles, three clearances, and one interception on the night.

San Antonio FC will return to USL Championship action on Saturday, March 30 at 7:30 p.m. as they travel to take on Austin Bold FC at Bold Stadium in the first edition of the Central Texas Derby.
