Ghanian Midfielder Makes the Move to the Kickers for 2019

RICHMOND, Va. – (Monday, March 18, 2019) – The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce that midfielder Charles Boateng will join the Kickers on loan from Western African Football Academy Soccer Club (WAFA SC) for the 2019 season, pending USSF and USL League One approval.

“Charles is a player that will be an unknown to many in the Richmond soccer community, but I bet he will not be one they forget,” said David Bulow, Kickers Head Coach. “He’s a player with a lot of interest from MLS and USL Championship clubs, but due to some external factors, he has landed with the Richmond Kickers, and I couldn’t be more excited to work with such an exciting young prospect.”

Born in Kumasi, Ghana, Boateng joined WAFA SC of the Ghanian Premier League at the age of 12, before joining the full-time senior squad at the age of 17. Boateng lead the league in scoring with seven goals before the remainder of the season was abandoned. WAFA SC has also produced a number of notable Ghanaian players currently in the United States including Ebenezer Ofori (NYCFC), Harrison Afful (Columbus Crew SC), Gideon Waja (Toronto FC II), and Solomon Asante (Phoenix Rising SC).

Capped by the Ghanian U-17 and U-20 National Teams, Boateng scored for the U-20 squad during the qualifying for the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.

The current Kickers roster is now at 15 players with the addition of Boateng, including Amass Amankona, Matt Bolduc, Dennis Chin, Jannik Eckenrode, Akira Fitzgerald, Josh Hughes, Daniel Jackson, Eli Lockaby, Aboubacar Keita, Mutaya Mwape, Maxi Rodriguez, Conor Shanosky, Scott Thomsen, and Braeden Troyer.
